Sonny Perdue is the current head of the United States Department of Agriculture. He was born in Perry, Georgia, and raised on a farm where he learned the value of hard work and determination. Sonny Perdue has a long history of public service, and he is committed to fighting for the rights of farmers and ensuring that they have the resources they need to succeed.
Early Life and Education
Sonny Perdue was born on December 20, 1946, in Perry, Georgia. He grew up on his family’s farm and attended public schools in Houston County, Georgia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia in 1971 and a master’s degree in animal science from Purdue University in 1972.
After graduation, Perdue served as a captain in the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps. He then returned to Georgia, where he ran his family’s farm and worked as a veterinarian. In 1991, Perdue was elected to the Georgia Senate. He served as that body’s president pro tempore from 1996 to 1998.
Business Career

After leaving office, Perdue became CEO of Purinton Farms, a poultry company based in Perry. He also served on the board of directors for several companies, including AG-Pro Companies, Inc., Catholic Healthcare West, and Sara Lee Corporation.
Political Career
Perdue ran unsuccessfully for the Georgia General Assembly in 1974. In 1991, he became the first Republican since Reconstruction to be elected Commissioner of Agriculture, a position he held until 1999. He ran for Governor of Georgia in 1998 and lost in the Republican primary runoff. He defeated Democratic Governor Roy Barnes in 2002 and was sworn in as governor on January 13, 2003.

The USDA traces its roots back to 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln created the Department of Agriculture to provide information about farming and related subjects. In 1889, the department was created by Congress to oversee agriculture-related policies and programs. Today, the USDA has more than 100,000 employees spread across the United States and around the world.
