History of SAE
The history of SAE begins in 1907 with a small group of engineers who pooled their resources to investigate problems of mutual interest. From these humble beginnings, SAE has grown to be an international organization with over 100,000 members in over 150 countries.
How did SAE come to be?
The roots of SAE can be traced back to the National FFA Organization, which was founded in 1928. In 1948, the organization established the National Future Farmers of America Foundation to provide financial support for FFA programs and activities. In 1950, the National Future Farmers of America Alumni Association was formed to engage former FFA members in supporting the organization.
In 1955, a group of agribusiness professionals came together to form the Cooperative Education Service (CES), which later became the Agricultural Education Division of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC). CES developed curriculum materials and provided training and support to Agricultural Education teachers.
In 1960, CES partnered with FFA to create SAE grants, which allowed students to receive financial assistance for approved SAE projects. The first official SAE Handbook was published in 1963, and has since been revised several times. In 1965, NASULGC and CES merged to form the American Association for vocational Agriculture (AAEA).
In 2006, AAEA changed its name to the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE). NAAE continues to provide support and resources for agricultural educators across the country.
