4-H is a youth development organization that aims to help young people learn and grow through hands-on experience. The “4-H” stands for head, heart, hands, and health.
The organization provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills, enjoy social activities, and learn about the care of animals and plants. 4-H also offers educational programs on topics such as nutrition, gardening, and citizenship.
4-H is open to all youth ages 5-19, regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic background. There are nearly 6 million 4-H members in the United States alone.

“Head” refers to critical thinking and problem solving. In 4-H, members learn how to think critically and solve problems independently and as part of a team.
“Heart” encompasses character development, empathy, and citizenship. 4-H members learn how to be caring citizens who contribute to their communities in positive ways.
“Hands” signifies service learning and real-world experience. Members put their knowledge into practice through service projects and hands-on learning experiences.
finally, “Health” encompasses physical, social, and emotional wellness. Members learn how to take care of themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. They also learn about nutrition, fitness, stress management, and more.
4-H is open to all youth, regardless of background or experience
4-H is a Community of Practice open to all youth, ages 5-19, that provides experiential learning opportunities to develop essential life skills. 4-H youth work with caring adults to gain knowledge and skills in areas such as agriculture, healthy living, and citizenship.
The 4-H program is delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of educators working within the land-grant university system. Cooperative Extension is located in all 50 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico—providing service to over 6 million youth annually.
4-H offers a wide variety of programs and activities
The 4-H program provides kids with a wide variety of programs and activities focused on science, technology, engineering and math. 4-H also offers many other programs that focus on healthy living, citizenship and leadership. 4-H is a great way for kids to get involved in their community, learn new skills and have fun!
